Sekhmet, Patron Goddess of Art

I’d like to reveal an extra-ordinary, life-changing experience I had in Egypt while visiting a small shrine a short walk away from Karnak’s main temple complex.
The year was 1991 and my husband, Vincent, was with me. Together, we encountered an intact lion-headed statue of Sekhmet which stood in a dark room illuminated from above by a narrow shaft of daylight from an opening in the ceiling created for that purpose.
On that day, both in silence and in awe we witnessed that particular statue open Her eyes. The shining eyes of the Egyptian Goddess were a vivid and luminous emerald green, so liquid against the solid stone of her face. What a sensation and such an honor to be held within the powerful gaze of an ancient Egyptian Goddess! The Divine Feminine chooses this form to manifest to me.
Sekhmet is very powerful but little-understood. Primarily, Sekhmet is the protector of Truth (Ma’at) and as such, she is a destroyer of evil and evil-doers. However, She is also the fountainhead of creativity, beauty and an inspirer of artists. Her many titles and names include: “Mother of Images,” “At Whose Wish the Arts were Born,” “The Source,” and “Beautiful Face, Image most Beloved by Art.”
Sekhmet is (and may always have been) my Patron Goddess of Art. May my work be worthy of The Living Goddess. Amen
