Hi!
I’m a 25 year old girl from Norway, with an odd question for you.
I found your website after seeing your name listed as the real name behind Bretka Klodatter, author of an article “Women Calligraphers”. I was actually searching the internet for the name “Klodatter”, hoping to find some of my old relatives in Norway, as my great-great-great-grandmother’s name was Karoline Klodatter. Is there a reason behind your choice of the name “Bretka Klodatter”? Do you have norwegian ancestors, or was it pure fantasy?
Best regards
Sunniva Martinsen, sunnivam@hotmail.com
Dear Sunniva,
If I was listed, it must be true. I only have a vague memory of it. But I do remember loving the name Bretka but am sorry I can be of no help regarding the Klodatter surname. It had to be made up.
Many people of Scandinavian heritage settled in Wisconsin where I grew up. My ancestory is actually Latvian. According to my husband’s research, my family can be traced to a certain mountain that has the distinction of being the origin point for the stories about were-wolves.
Smiles, Darlene
BTW – Sunniva is a very beautiful name.
Dear Darlene
Thank you for your reply! Yes this was quite some time ago (1981), but it was pretty much all i could find regarding the name “Klodatter”. It translates to “Claw-daughter” (would fit well for a were-wolf!), and my aunt’s research tracks it back to Finland, not far from Latvia! But I understand that you using the name was a meer coincidence.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer, and thank you for the compliment regarding my first name!
Best regards, Sunniva
